Renowned academic to discuss crime prevention at uOttawa
OTTAWA, September 18, 2006 — An Oxford professor is returning to his former university to deliver a lecture on crime prevention. Julian Roberts, the Assistant Director of the University of Oxford’s Centre for Criminology, will speak on perceptions and realities surrounding crime prevention on the evening of September 20.
In papers prepared for UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Roberts has argued that while public perceptions of increasing crime rates are often incorrect, governments still have a responsibility to ensure that criminal justice systems are responsive to the public. Roberts is visiting Ottawa as some of his former uOttawa colleagues prepare to launch the University’s Institute for Crime Prevention. The Institute will be formally launched at a ceremony September 21 at the University.
