uOttawa alumni Hugh Segal and Dennis Dawson appointed to the Senate

OTTAWA, August 2, 2005 — University of Ottawa alumni Hugh Segal and Dennis Dawson have been summoned to the Senate of Canada by Her Excellency the Governor General.

Hugh Segal

A graduate of History at the University of Ottawa and Member of the Order of Canada, Hugh Segal has had a multi-faceted career as a columnist, author, political strategist and educator. He is currently the President of the Institute for Research on Public Policy, and a Professor of Public Policy at the School of Business at Queen's University, and the Ivey Fellow at the School of Policy Studies. Mr. Segal has held a series of senior positions including Associate Secretary of the Ontario cabinet and Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister of Canada. He sits on the boards of directors of CPI Plastics, the Ontario Energy Savings Corporation, SNC Lavalin, Vincor International, and St. Lawrence Cement. In the community and public-service sector, he is a member of a series of boards, including The Atlantic Council of Canada, the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada, the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation, and the Canadian Advisory Board for the Ditchley Foundation.  He will be sitting in the Senate as a member of the Conservative Party of Canada.

Dennis Dawson

Dennis Dawson first studied political science at Laval University and the University of Ottawa where he received a Bachelor’s degree. He later graduated from Laval University with a Master's in Business Administration. He began his career in public life as one of the youngest elected school board trustees in Québec, and was elected as Chairman of Québec's second largest School Board. In 1977, Dennis Dawson was elected as one of the youngest Members of Parliament in Canadian history where he served his constituents of Louis-Hébert for three consecutive terms. He also chaired the Québec caucus after working as Parliamentary Secretary for Employment and Immigration as well as Labour. He later ran the Québec operation of one of Canada's leading government relations firms. As an executive for Hill and Knowlton, he managed governmental relations for clients and developed public affairs strategies. Dennis Dawson has also appeared regularly as a political commentator on national television. He is married and has thre children. He will be sitting in the Senate as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada.
