The University of Ottawa congratulates its six new members of the Royal Society of Canada
OTTAWA, July 6, 2004 — Six University of Ottawa faculty have been named as new Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada.
The Royal Society is the senior national body of distinguished Canadian scientists and scholars, and consists of approximately 1800 fellows, who are selected by their peers for outstanding contributions to the arts and sciences.
The new Fellows are:
- Constance Backhouse, Faculty of Law – Prof. Backhouse is a renowned legal scholar and author of several books and countless articles on her areas of interest, which include human rights, women and the law, and racial discrimination. She has received a number of major awards, including an honorary doctorate from the Law Society of Upper Canada.
- Patrick Imbert, Department of lettres françaises – Prof. Imbert is a University Research Chair at the University, studying stereotypes and multiculturalism in Canada, and a leading literary thinker and cultural critic.
- Pierre Lévy, Department of Communications – Prof. Levy studies the concept of collective intelligence and knowledge-based societies. He is a world-leading thinker on “cyberculture.”
- Walter Moser, Department of Modern Languages and Literatures – Prof. Moser, the Canada Research Chair holder in Literary and Cultural Transfers, studies how cultures influence one another in a world characterized by “globalization.”
- Maria Luisa Rivero, Department of Linguistics – a professor at the University of Ottawa since 1970, Prof. Rivero studies Balkan, Slavic, and Romance languages, and has been a visiting professor at numerous universities in Spain, Mexico, Argentina, and Greece. She is the author of four books and dozens of scholarly articles.
- Joseph Yvon Thériault, Faculty of Social Sciences - Professor of sociology and director of CIRCEM, the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Citizenship and Minorities, Professor Thériault won the "Prix de la présidence de l'Assemblée nationale du Québec" for his book Critique de l'américanité : mémoire et démocratie au Québec, published in 2003 by Québec Amérique.
