A University of Ottawa professor receives international award in organometallic chemistry

OTTAWA, June 5, 2009 — Associate professor and University Research Chair in novel catalytic transformations Keith Fagnou received the OMCOS award in organometallic chemistry.

The award is presented every two years to a scientist under 40 in recognition of outstanding research contributions to organometallic chemistry which studies the chemical compounds containing bonds between carbon and metal in which metal plays a key role.

Professor Fagnou’s research group, based out of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Ottawa, explores new and less wasteful chemical reactions that will enable more efficient, less costly and more environmentally friendly preparations of molecules that find applications such as pharmaceuticals, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and energy transport devices. A major focus of their research is directed at changing the way chemists consider chemical reactivity, particularly the wide spread perception that pre-activation is required in the construction of carbon-carbon bonds.

OMCOS, the Organometallic Chemistry Directed Towards Organic Synthesis, is a biennial International Symposium that brings together chemists from industry and academia from all over the world to present and discuss the latest advances in new metal-catalysed and metal-mediated reactions.

The University of Ottawa is committed to research excellence and encourages an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge creation, which attracts the best academic talent from across Canada and around the world.
