University of Ottawa professor Paul Corkum finalist for NSERC's highest honour

OTTAWA, March 4, 2009 — Paul Corkum, professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Ottawa and researcher at the National Research Council of Canada has been selected as a finalist for the 2009 Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering—the highest honour of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Professor Corkum’s nomination stems from his innovative research in a new area of science: attosecond science. The ultimate goal of his work is to control the movement of electrons as they speed along inside molecules, which promises breakthrough applications in fields ranging from quantum computing to diagnostic medicine.

Corkum’s work as an experimental physicist has already garnered several prizes, including the prestigious Polanyi Award in March 2008.

The NSERC Herzberg Medal is awarded annually to an individual who has demonstrated sustained excellence and influence in research, for a body of work conducted in Canada and having led to significant advances in the natural sciences or engineering. In addition to the medal, the winner receives $1 million to use for personal university-based research or for related purposes like the establishment of research scholarships, fellowships or chairs in his or her name at Canadian universities.
