University of Ottawa Recipient of Chair in Métis Studies

OTTAWA, September 30, 2008 — The University of Ottawa has been selected as the recipient of $3 million in financial support from the Government of Ontario for a Chair in Métis Studies. It was chosen from among eight short listed Ontario universities by an independent Selection Panel, established by the Council of Ontario Universities (COU).

The University of Ottawa will contribute an additional $1 million to the permanent endowment to support the Chair in Métis Studies. This Chair will play a major role in advancing knowledge about the Métis Nation and its members in Ontario amongst non-Métis. The University of Ottawa is looking forward to working with the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) to meet common goals and to provide exceptional educational opportunities for Métis peoples.

“We recognize the importance and relevance of the Chair in Métis Studies. The University of Ottawa is extremely honoured and privileged to have been chosen as the recipient,” explained Mr. Allan Rock, President and Vice-Chancellor. “This is yet another opportunity for us to enhance our existing relationships and commitments to Métis, First Nations and Inuit peoples.”

“We’re proud to support this important Research Chair in Métis Studies at the University of Ottawa,” said John Milloy, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities. “With this new Chair, the university will be at the forefront of efforts to increase knowledge and awareness among all Ontarians of the Métis Nation's history and vibrant culture.”

The University of Ottawa will begin their search immediately for a distinguished candidate and will submit the nomination to the Selection Panel for approval. Members of this panel include Dr. David Strangway, Founder and Chancellor of Quest University Canada; Dr. Arthur May; Dr. Harold Shapiro; and Dr. Harry Swain, Secretary. It is expected that that Chair will be installed early in the 2009-10 academic year.

“The Ontario government is committed to forging stronger relationships with Aboriginal people based on trust and respect,” stated Minister of Aboriginal Affairs Brad Duguid. “The work of the Métis research chair will help increase understanding of the history and important contributions that Métis people have made and continue to make in our province today.”
