University of Ottawa announces the creation of a research chair in journalism ethics
OTTAWA, May 7, 2008 — The University of Ottawa is pleased to announce the creation of a research chair in journalism ethics, to be held by Professor Marc-François Bernier. It is the first research chair awarded in the field of communications.
Bernier holds a PhD in political science and is a communications and journalism professor at the University of Ottawa. He has published many scientific articles and book chapters on journalism ethics and professional conduct and is frequently called upon as an expert witness in civil defamation cases.
The Research Chair in Canadian Francophonie Specializing in Journalism Ethics results from several years of professional practice, research, publications and teaching.
Its mission is to promote scientific research, theoretical and critical thinking and training in journalism ethics for francophones in Canada, Quebec and abroad. It also involves working with English- and Spanish-speaking researchers.
Financed by the University of Ottawa under its Research Chairs in Canadian Francophonie Program, the chair will also receive research funds from public agencies and donations from the private sector. This funding will further the chair’s impact by disseminating its research work, holding public symposiums and conferences, helping train researchers and, most importantly, creating a bursary program for graduate students at the University of Ottawa.
The research chairs are awarded to outstanding researchers, recognizing their research contributions, their advancement of knowledge, and the education of young researchers.
There are presently thirty-five research chairs financed by the University of Ottawa.
