The University of Ottawa receives $6 million from the Ontario Research Fund

OTTAWA, February 11, 2008 — As one of Canada’s premier research-intensive universities, the University of Ottawa is proud to announce that three researchers, all in the Faculty of Engineering, have received grants from the Ontario Research Fund – Research Excellence program. The program promotes research excellence in Ontario by supporting transformative, internationally significant research in the province.

The uOttawa supported researchers are:

Leta Fernandes, Department of Civil Engineering
Management and disposal of solid waste is one of Ontario’s biggest environmental challenges. Leta Fernandes is investigating integrated solid waste management solutions in an Eco-Industrial Park to reduce the waste in landfill sites and to recover bio-energy and other valuable resources.

Emil Petriu, School of Information Technology and Engineering
Automatic recognition of people and their activities has very important social implications, because it is related to the extremely sensitive topic of civil liberties. Emil Petriu is developing and commercializing new multimodal sensor surveillance technologies for the timely identification of human intent in environments involving human crowds, such as school campuses, shopping centers or airports.

Hussein Mouftah, School of Information Technology and Engineering
Today, sensor networks are playing an increasingly significant role in providing many services of critical importance to Canada, including environmental monitoring, emergency preparedness, infrastructure performance, vehicular traffic monitoring, transportation safety support and biomedicine. Hussein Mouftah is focusing on developing wireless sensor network for applications such as telemedicine, intelligent building and home security as well as intelligent vehicular systems.
