Ottawa, Toronto book publishers announce new partnership

OTTAWA, June 11, 2001 — Two of Canada's premier scholarly book publishers, the University of Ottawa Press and the University of Toronto Press, are pleased to announce that they will enter into a new partnership effective 15 July 2001. University of Ottawa Press, Canada's premier bilingual publisher and oldest French language university press, will continue to acquire manuscripts in French and English. University of Toronto Press will provide editorial support, design, production, marketing, and distribution for all University of Ottawa Press titles. University of Ottawa Press will continue to publish under their own imprint, and maintain their own editorial board.

Roda Roberts, chair of the Editorial Board of University of Ottawa Press commented:

"We look forward to working closely with our colleagues in Toronto. We will gain advantage from the economies of scale which result from working with a bigger Press. We are particularly pleased to be able to affirm that all publishing decisions will remain with the University of Ottawa Press. University of Ottawa Press will remain an active and important player in the Canadian book publishing community."

George Meadows, President and Publisher of University of Toronto Press, agreed, and said:

"We have worked with University of Ottawa Press in a limited way for some years. There is an excellent fit between our two organizations, and we think that this strategic partnership, which will allow us to work more effectively in both English and French, will benefit scholarly publishing in Canada."

Vicki Bennett, Editor-in-Chief since 1997, will assume the position of Director, University of Ottawa Press. She will be located in Ottawa.
