Excellence in Teaching
2001 Recipient - Claude Lamontagne
A charismatic teacher who is much appreciated by his students, Claude Lamontagne, professor at the School of
Psychology, is the recipient of the University of Ottawa 2000-2001 Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Professor Lamontagne has kept his love of teaching by having fun and doing what he wants. "I've been fortunate enough to have been given a lot of freedom in what I do. If I've accomplished something, it's by sharing this liberty with others." His definition of liberty goes well with his teaching philosophy "Teaching is letting others be."
Since he started teaching at the University of Ottawa in 1977, Professor Lamontagne has been known for using exceptional educational tools and skills. This committed professor is known for numerous contributions to his field. Apart from developing new educational methods and courses, he has been active in co-op and permanent education programs. His course entitled "Des robots et des hommes" is always a hit during the Enrichment Mini Course and he has developed a number of popular laboratories. During his term as Director of Undergraduate Studies in psychology in 1997, he also proposed a work strategy that has helped reduce the number of failures and abandonment rates in the school's required statistical analysis course.
Professor Lamontagne seems to have a talent for paired accomplishments: an equally good teacher in English and in French; appreciated equally by his undergraduate and graduate students; and will soon publish, two books: L'expertise constructiviste: un modèle formel and In Search of M.C. Escher's Metaphysical Unconscious. Committed to his community, he is the founder and president (1986) of the Institute Anaximandre, comprised of education and psychotherapy researchers who serve as consultants to boards of education.
