Excellence in Media Relations Award
2006 Recipient - Claudio Brun del Re
Claudio Brun Del Re joined the University in 1993 as senior architect. He held this position for nine years. In 2003, Claudio was named assistant director for planning and programming within the University’s Physical Resources Service.
The University has expanded significantly since Claudio came on board. He has been a driving force and a visionary in conceiving, planning and building the University campus.
One can well imagine the challenges of a downtown campus with constrained boundaries and a long-established residential community as neighbours. It is no small feat to balance the needs of new buildings requirements, pedestrianization requirements and parking requirements, while maintaining the support of the campus constituents and the Sandy Hill neighbours. Yet it is a feat that Claudio has orchestrated and successfully accomplished.
Claudio has been closely involved in every aspect of the University’s evolving master plan including: land use planning, planning approvals, public consultations, transportation planning and civil engineering services.
He was instrumental in developing a recent document entitled Planning, Urban Design, and Architecture Principles and Directions — a document that provides a foundation for good design that sets the course for the University’s future development.
The list of major projects in which Claudio has been involved over the years is impressive: Arts II building, the new sports complex, the SITE building, the Hyman Soloway Residence, the Biosciences complex, the Desmarais Building and the King Edward Avenue Precinct Design Plan.
As impressive as this list may be, it is the trusting relationships that Claudio has built over the years that is the true measure of his achievement.
Since the beginning of his career with the University, Claudio has made a conscientious and concerted effort to understand the issues and requirements of the City of Ottawa and the Sandy Hill community with regards to the existing campus and the master plan.
He has actively sought input, learned of the issues, and been forthright and concise in communicating the University’s plan. The success of the relationships he has built over the years is based on timely and meaningful communications.
These qualities have made him an outstanding representative of the University community.
